Re: catholic church and immigrants

I feel sorry for the illegals, 95% of them are good hard working people, trying to better their life.

Its the other 5% that has me worried.

We are taught to be compassionate, but not at the expense of our own lives.

I am 100% for the guest worker program. I just want every border crossing to be legal, so we can track who they are. Right now any criminal or terrorist can walk on over.

The catholic church has their hearts in the right place, but arent thinking with their heads.

Ken

The Cardinal doesn't seem to see a difference between legal and illegal immigrants. He does a severe disservice to legal immigrants by lumping them together.

The law doesn't penalize legal immigrants or those who assist them. It seeks to stop, or reduce illegal immigration.

I agree with KIZ about the guest worker program. It is a needed, compassionate program that will move us away from undocumented, uncontrolled invasion by those who pay no taxes and need a disproportionate share of services.

I admit to not knowing exactly what is in this house bill, but I do agree we need a rational immigration and guest worker program.

My suspicion, judged solely by what else has come out this congress, is that "rational" would not be the first adjective chosen to describe it.

The majority of illegals are Catholic. I am not surpised that the Catholic church would be interested in more tithing.

Not really. Conservative estimates but the taxpayer burden at over $40-billion for illegal aliens. Overwhelmingly, illeagal aliens do NOT put into the system what they take out of it. Also, estimated that 3 out of 5 illegals coming over the southern border are bring narcotics with them to jump start their new life here. Maybe 5% turn out to be those “good hardworking people” you speak of. They are welcome here, just as soon as they pass thru the appropriate immigration channels.

Me thinks every president since Reagan has invoked an amnesty program for illegal aliens as a way to get at their income to shore up a collapsing social security program. It is only those illegal aliens that can contribute SSI payments that are allowed amnesty/citizenship.

The catholic church is not bound by borders.Their ministry is the world. It is their job to take care of the well being of their faithful,no matter what worldly frontiers there are. That is why they have been around for the past 2000 years.
The church cannot afford to pander to the wishes of local government, because that would put it against its followers on the other side of the border.
I think that we will see the church paying lip service to its own ideals and at the same time quietly supporting the local government decisions.
That is how the church survived the last 2000 years

There you are KIZ, I was beginning to wonder if you had run afoul of the local medical consortitium. ;) No Guest worker program in Norway? :p Gee, if you were an illegal immigrant in the US you could get free medical care. I think what you are supporting is open immigration. What does Phil Ochs have to do with this thread? YIIIIIIIIIIIIKES Where is Quarlesome Cat when you need him? ;) This thread has all the elements, Politics, Relgiion, Economics and ...................Innuendo......

I like the Idea of a guest worker program, that usually means they come over and work a while, then go back home to spend it. If they stayed longer they would take my job.A lot of them have more skills than I, but they are not around all year. Im learniing but it takes time to aquire all the skills some of the mexican people have.
Of the ones that I have worked with, they work slow, but its unbelievably what they get done in a day.

If the Cardinal is right, and the law would make it illegal for the catholic (or any church) to offer them communion, then the law is way out of bounds. Period.

Furthermore, if the law makes it illegal to feed the hungry then all Christians must be prepared to become outlaws.

Will we all have to bring passports to church now?

Re: catholic church and immigrants

In reading the link prior to reading the thd, I too noted broad brush stroke statement. In not differentiating between legal and illegal immigrants seems the Catholic Church is encouraging the Illegal’s to do as they wish, and willfully break the law. Not a good message for the church to send IMHO. :( Bit of a stretch but it seems the church is supporting and condoning aiding and abetting the criminals in their quest to remain in this country Illegally. Just don't seem right to me.

matttt,

The Church transends political bounds. At least it used to and should.

I do not agree with much that the Catholic Church has to offer.

In this instance, the LAW is the invasion, not the illegals. I do not have to restate my view on illegals.
