Here in my part of the world, we have had some folks stealing cattle. Not one or two but sometimes 25 or 30 at a time! They cut the fence and pull in a truck and trailer and just load em up. Crazy thing is the farmers are almost always at home when they do it! They just pull in the middle of the night and have at it.Several sherriffs departments are looking in to it, but dont have any real leads yet. The rustlers just best hope that the cops find em first, because the local farmers are startin to get itchy trigger fingers.I feel sorry for the farmers, they lose alot of money with the loss of each cow, not counting the money they spent on feed and vet bills. The rustlers best be glad this isnt the 1800's, because they wouldnt be sitting in a jail cell, they would be "swingin where the little birdies singin" if ya know what I mean. ;)

WHere my wife came from it happened a lot later than that. probably in the late 30s or early 40s
one of her friends grandfather caught a rustler shot him hauled him in across the saddel and dumped him at the shierffs office. Nothing was ever said. Were it still that way thier would be a lot less thievery.

Had a few times on the ranch that we had some butchered in the pasture. Always had a real good idea who it was and they really needed the food so we looked the other way. Only lost about 1 every 2 or 3 years to them.

Need to find a tall tree and a short rope!

About 20 years ago, in Abilene, there was a rash of cattle rustling. The rustlers would stop by and feed the cattle every night for a week or so. The cattle would begin to show up at the appointed hour and after a few days, they just cut the fence and loaded them up.

Unfortunately, there werent/arent any tall trees in Abilene.

Get all the rope in Texas find a tall old tree
And hang up them bad boys for the people to see
That justice is the one thing you should always find.
You got to saddle up your boys
You got to draw a hard line.

Reminds me -true story- when I was a kid had an uncle in north central Louisiana with a few head of cattle...one year there was several incidents of deer hunters shooting the cows. Uncle Wilbur got so fed up with it, he took a paintbrush and painted "COW" on all his cows. Next day, his John Deere tractor was full of holes.

We had the same problem on our ranch on the Golan Heights. The problem there was that the fine was smaller than the profit.
One night we caught three of them at gun point. We tied them to a traffic sign and lowered their pants.Next morning after a million mosquito bites, the cops(who were in the know) booked them for indecent exposure.

That happened to your uncle too?
Can't believe how the term of rustling has been distorted with the passage of time. On the open ramge Rustling, in most cases, was not only legal but a common practice. The term comes from "gotta rustle up some grub." The more "civilization" encroached the less the distinguishement between rustling and stealing became. A thief may have been a rustler, but a rustler was not necessarily a thief. Thus another arm of beauracracy was born. ;)
