I've got a 1986 Calkins roller trailer that I am attempting to replace all the wobble rollers. Has anyone experience with removing this style retaining ring (see pic) ? zpfile001.jpg

I have a 1982 Caulkins trailer that I am currently overhauling. The rear keel roller was seized to the shaft. I had to cut the shaft on either side of the roller to remove it. I believe the ends of the shaft are just staked to retain the washers. You could grind the stakes off to remove the washer but I don't know how you would retain them after. Mine had a 3/4" shaft but I could only find 5/8" rollers so I am trying to figure what to do there. Good luck.

Cheers.

Cut enough roller so you can get at the retaining bits. Then go at the retainer with pliers, punches, PB Blaster, or heat. If all that fails you can use a small "whizzer" saw very carefully from 2 angles to then split the roller core and retainer
Your final goal is to save the shaft and it's retention groove.

That shaft is "staked" in three places to retain the washer. If you can cut off the roller you can use a punch to drive the staked portions back against the shaft. However you will not be able to re-use them. You must drill the shaft either on the end and tap it for a retaining screw and washer OR if there is enough room drill the shaft through and use hog ring retainers or cotter pins. You can try push caps but I don't think they will work.

Just simply stake it again to retain the new roller and washer... Plenty of room to do that several times
