CB on a boat as well as VHF?

Is it useful to have a CB on a boat as well as a VHF or is it unnecessary?

i don't know if it's good to have both. but mine came with a cb and it got replaced with a vhf...... i switched for safety reasons....... boaters and the uscg listen to vhf. truckers i think use cbs......

Yes it is useful, I have both and it makes it easy to talking to boats close by who have CB's, without being on VHF. I doubt that very many boats have CB any more. Most of my friends do. Just about everyone is using cell phones.

never seen a boat with a cb, never use the cb in my truck and i have seen other trucks with cb. I don't think you would ever use it. VHF is all you ever need.

For many, many years my boats always had both a VHF and CB radio, but when I moved into a big boat 3 years ago I didn't bother with the CB.
I did however, install a second fixed VHF with antenna for redundancy.

I think it really depends on your boating area. There's a lot of lakes that don't have much VHF activity, and in those cases it might be good to have a CB onboard.

it all depends on where you are boating. you need to check with authorities, as to what they monitor. dialing 911 is not the best for a boater, as 911 operators no nothing about navigation, and locating you.

Most of my boating is in the Georgia Strait snd Gulf Islands in B.C.
Definitely need a marine radio (which I now have) but when I got the boat the guy gave me a C.B. with it, but not installed. I was wondering if I should just install it... but sounds like not too many boaters have them anyway.

vhf is the marine choice of radios.

Go to the local marina/launch ramp and see what others are doing. Sport fishers here run about 80% CB's.

It really depends on what the folks are running in your area. I have noticed that at many mountain and rural rivers/lakes, the guys like the CBs, where anywhere near salt water, it is all VHF. I only use VHF and cell. If more than one boat is going with us, we take a few of the small handheld radios (I guess these are CB too?).

you have hand held cb's and vhf's. i have both vhf's stationary, hand held, sealed and in pocket of PFD.
