cd 12 problems with carb concerns that low and high needles damaged also have gas com

hello I recently picked up a cd12 johnson outboard owner said it last ran 3 years ago carb looked like it I went through it and cleaned it he had primed motor oil into it for storage my main concern was finding new low and high speed needles for it low speed looks like it was over tightened tip damaged. also I noticed gas in barrel while trying to start I got it to fire and run for 2-3 seconds at a time already decided to purchase carb kit but turning over out of barrel I have gas leaking out of lower unit and upper mating area is this normal if its getting to much gas? or do I have other seals blown? any help would be apprieciated

Make sure to install a new float also while you're in there. Might be a stuck float with gas coming out the front of the carb and running down into exhaust housing. If it's unburnt gas/oil mix, that is normal to see some unburnt mix running down exhaust housing.

Yep...I'd recheck the carb, especially the float and needle seat under it. The Top Secret file at the top of the J/E forum tells you how to set both carb needles. If the tip of of the slow-speed needle is ringed/grooved badly, you need to replace it...don't know if it is still available from dealers. Several outboard places often mentioned on this forum should have one, though...Laings outboards comes to mind. Might also try an ad on the free classifieds at www.aomci.org

thanks my main concern was gas at the lower where it mates with exaust housing I found an excellent site on rebuilding carb. I hope I am able to find new needle for the low and glad gas/oil mix is normal if its flooding thanks I will update I got a fourteen foot with this motor for a pretty good deal $300
trailer and all hope I can get it running again to bad it has been painted over wrong color on motor hood. thanks matt
