OK I have this Johnson Seahorse CD-19 5.5 that I bought a 10-15 years ago then I got health problems. So now I have that in line I'm tried to go boating for the first. But the prop does not go into neutral. When I have the shifter in neutural not running the prop acts like it is in gear turns some but stops in both directions. A friend said the power unit has to taken off to remove the shifter and remove the lower end. Any idea on what the problem is so I know where to start? They say it is a great little motor. Yet to see.

So is the shifter flopping around loose without doing anything? If so,, it has come loose below the powerhead. However if the shifter "clicks" as you move it FNR, but the prop stays in gear, then yes the problem is in the lower unit. Whichever it is, the powerhead has to come off before you can fix the problem.

The little bell crank on the end of the shift handle may have broken.------Easy to remove powerhead for inspection.----There are no adjustment on that shift set-up.----I say that is good design.
