Hi Guys, i've just started the restoration of my 17ft speed boat:

I would really like to put a CD player and some speakers in the boat. It would be great to cruise the oceans to my favourite tunes.

My question is how is this achievable? The boat currently has no electrics in it at all. I'm fairly confident in wireing in all the components/speakers, but just not sure how to power the setup? Solar power?

Your ideas/thoughts/advice are very welcome.

Thanks in advance

You hook em up the same way you would hook one up in an automobile. The CD player dosen't know or care whether it is in a car or boat. And yes you will need a 12 volt battery - you can use tha same one that you use for the engine (I assume you are going to put an engine on that nice looking rig).

And check the stringers before you install it, and use epoxy (check your other post)

You can get a water resistant (splash) mount for standard DIN mount car stereos at your marine store, both external mount and thru the dash mount. I'd recommend soft mounting it with some weather stripping or thick double stick tape, your boat bounces a lot more than a car, and you will see the CD skip sometimes.

Wire it up to your battery (you will have one for the motor) but make sure to either wire the stereo's igniton switch wire to a switch (the stereo can draw 2+ amps even when off if you don't) or in my case, i found that removing the faceplate drops the current to almost zero. Otherwise your battery will go dead in a matter of a few days of non use. You need to leave the stereo's main power wire connected to keep the settings (radio stations, balance, bass, treble, etc.) stored, but you don't want the whole stereo to continue to be powered. Ergo the switch on the ignition switch wire or faceplate removal.

The stator and charging system of a motor for your boat's size (guessing 90HP +) will put out around 7 to 10 amps, plenty to provide the stereo with what it needs while keeping the battery charged too.

Good Luck!

Skip the cd play.
Do you really want to subject the player , speakers, amp, and your cd's to the water and salt?

Just get a decent mp3 player.

And get a couple sets of wireless headphones.

Easy, inexpensive, portable, theft-proof.
