CD-Rs. What's the difference?

Back in the olden days when we used magnetic tape, there was one kind for voice and one kind for music. I could tell the difference if I recorded music on the wrong kind of tape, it just didn't sound as good. Now that everything has gone to CD, I see that there are Data CDs and Music CDs. Is there a difference? Can the difference be heard if music is burned on a data CD? Is music stored as wav or mp3 okay on data CDs and music for CD players best on music CDs? Or is it all just a marketing ploy?

Absolutely nothing. I think, although I'm not sure, that audio CDs include a commission to the RIAA, so they don't get their panties in such a bunch about home audio recorders, and they cost more for no reason. The CDs themselves are exactly the same.

Some, not sure about all, of the stand alone CD-recorders require the music CD-r's. I believe it's a disc format issue. However, in a PC/Mac either will work. So as long as you are burning on a computer you will have no problem with the standard CD-r stock. Some people I know swear by one brand or the other which I can't really say I've noticed a difference when it comes to CD's. As far as Data/Music all cd drives can read the info, the difference is whether the controller can decode it. Thats why you will get a no disc error if you put a cd that isn't recorded to play in all players into your car, bookshelf or component player. At least thats the way it was explained to me. If you plan to burn discs for use in other players just make sure you select the proper burn settings from your software and you should be good to go. Although I have seen a few CD decks that don't like to play burned discs.

No difference that I'm aware of. I buy the staples brand spindle of 50 for stuff I don't really care about. For things I consider important I get the Imation or HP discs. They have a textured surface which is nice to write on. Honestly though, I think the Staples ones are just as good.

There is a quality RANGE in the disks that will have affect how long the finished disk lasts

But brand and price dont allways mean quality :(

I dont have much problem with CD stuff lasting but DVD disks have really let me down on life span

That's pretty much what I thought. Thanks for saving me the money. :)

I just bought a batch from Maxell and every other one has a defect. The music skips all over the place. Earlier I bought a stack of TDK's without one bad one. I'd used Maxell before without a hitch, but this last buy was not worth the sales price.
