cd14 5.5 johnson overheating

went thru, what I thought was everything. new impeller, gaskets, cleaned and blowed out ,tune up.put in 55 gal drum of water, started ran fine for
about 30 minutes noticed water would come out tale tale staedy and good
was warm to touch but not burn you hot 15 minutes later the water coming out would burn you then come out fast and cool down then quit comeing out
getting ready to shut down water started coming out fast and cooling down then stop did this several times then water just quit coming out and died pulled plugs let cool down acts like thermostat out does it have one didnt see nothing in the seloc book I baught any help appreciated.thanks

Try raising the water level in the drum to about 3 inches below the exhaust relief where the water sprays out. It sounds like it might be losing prime.
If that has no effect, or if it's already there, it may have overheated before and boogered up the exhaust cover gaskets, letting exhaust gases build in the water jackets until it overcomes the water pressure. (Just a guess)
I also thought that one of the experts here mentioned a tiny hole in the water pump cover that had so be clear in order for the water pump to work correctly, but I'm not sure if your motor had it. What did inside of the pump look like when you changed the impeller?

I thank you for your reply was just reading book the one thing I over looked
cleaning out and new gasket for exhaust cover heat the bolts up take it apart and check it out thanks again I'll let you know how it goes.

Mr Jennings hit the nail on the head.went to remove exhaust cover all bolts lose finger tight, gasket crumbeld like dry dirt getting hit by a hammer. thanks for the help.

Glad you found it! I'd have thought with those screws loose, that thing would have been spraying water out of the cover......
That motor is too nice not to run good.:)
