Hello, I have a 1959 cd16 5.5 that I have had for about 3 years ,bought off ebay as a running motor, turns out it hadn't ran in about 10 years......anyway, I finally decided to see if I could get her running. I put in all new ignition parts, converted to a fuel pump and cleaned the carb. The tstat is no good. Is it necessary to run a thermostat or can I leave it out? will this cause a problem if I don't replace it?? just asking....I had another outboard once and the marine mechanic said that it really didn't need a thermostat it it. Is this correct??

Thanks
By the way she purrs like a kitten!!

Re: cd16 thermostat

It will probably run without the t-stat, but will run too cold, especially in cold climates. If it had a thermostat, it was engineered to run with one. They are not that expensive. I would replace it.

OMC would not have gone to the trouble of designing in a thermostat system if they didn't think it would help. If you run it cold you will carbon up your pistons a lot quicker and may foul your sparks plugs at the most unopportune times.

There cheap and easy to replace. I would.
