Cdi rectifier bad in one year?

I put a cdi rectifier in my 97 150 evinrude last year. Now this preseason it's not charging and no tachometer. To me that doesn't sound possible. Has anyone heard of that happening so quickly?

Have you verified that it is the rectifier and not the stator? If it is the rectifier, could be your stator was over driving the current capability of the rectifier. But without being there and doing some tests, that is only a wild guess.

Yeah I'm waiting for the rainy weather to clear so I can try to test the stator. I always have bad luck with these lol

Presumably it is a rectifier and voltage regulator

Regulating involves limiting any high voltage reaching the battery and electronics
Rectifying being used to convert AC---->-DC

In a normal scenario a good battery should self-limit it's input current as it reaches full charge

Is it possible a defective battery would allow to much current to flow in & boil dry while overheating the stator/regulator/rectifier elements of the charging system .

The normal issue is a loose connection or connecting the battery the wrong way, this will destroy the rectifier instantly.

You have another thread on wiring issues and potential overheating. Either could potentially destroy the rectifier/regulator.

[ed. One approach might be to replace the water pump impeller as a first priority, and make sure you have water circulation. Maybe you have already done that....]

ondarvr said this perfectly....

Loose or corroded battery cables are the number one killer of rec/regs! Wing nuts do not count as being tight enough to put on battery cables. Use star washer and nuts in conjunction with a wrench. Yes, it is that important.

A weak impeller can cause failure also as block never fully fills when at low RPM......that why you change impeller at least ever 2 years no matter how good it seems to "pee"
