I just acquired a boat and motor on a trailer. It's a 1989 (approximately) Smokercraft with a 2000 40hp Yamaha 4 stroke. It has 703 controller on the right side and has a Panther model 55 tilt.

The motor is in excellent shape and the boat/trailer is in fairly good shape except for wiring. The guy who owned it previously just patched in every electronic he bought and left the wire as a "rats nest". Also, he must be related to Red Greene since everything possible was strapped down with duct tape. I am going to rewire but I would like to know if there is a center console I can install and move everything from the starboard side to the new console.

I know this will involve $$$ and moving the steering and motor controls. Am I looking at a...

Can Do

Can Do with $$$

or

Forget about it!

Thanks for any advice or places I could look for ideas on how and what to do.

Re: Center console

It all comes down to skill, time, and money.

My advise would be to build a new console, that way you can everything where you want it. Some plywood paint will cost $$

You can buy a blank console off ebay or at boatersworld or maybe even here at iboats, but either way it is going to cost $$$$$.

Regarding placement of stuff, you have to take into account a couple of things. My biggest issue was with the steering cable. I have a teleflex rotary helm and the one I have has the cable coming out of the stbd side of the helm. This made me move the steering more to the port side that I was originally thinking. Throw in the routing of the motor control cables and you will have some places that you may not be able to put in something you were planning on, like a radio.

Building and wiring my console took about 3~4 weeks of an hour here an hour there, in total maybe 20 ~ 30 hrs, thats from none to done.

In the end the price is going to be inversely proportional to your skill and comfort levels. The more comfortable you are with your skills and abilities the cheaper the project will be. I think I spent about $200 for the plywood, paint, finish, wire, terminals, switches, and lights.
