What would make a ceiling a/c vent drip water? I've checked the roof and theres no leaks in it. Can an A/C vent condensate on the inside or outside and drip water? If so, what do I do to stop the problem.

Insulate around the vent and whatever feeds it?

Re: Central A/C question and help

there is insulation around the entire duct and vent....from the heat exchange, main trunk line, feeder and vent.

First check the drain outside and see if it is stopped up. Could be dirt diver nest. This will be around the eave of the house.

If not go into attic. There is a metal pan under the evaporator that has a drain leading out of the house. You need to blow out the drain, preferrably from pan out with air pressure. Then as water drains down add chlorine or chorox to the pan. Do this each year.

Already checked it....it drains in to the sewer vent that the washing machine is on. The drain pan under the heat exchange is dry.

I sometimes get a little condensation on the vent grill because it gets so cool, but not in the ducting. Try removing the grill to see if it is coming from the duct, or is just on the grill.

BTW, it could be that things are a just more humid down there in Mississippi since Katrina rolled through. Do any of your neighbors have a similar problem?

You need to determine if the water is coming from the inside of the duct, outside of the duct or is simply condensate on the grille, EF. It is possible that the AC is not the source of the water.

Good luck. :)

Re: Central A/C question and help

With high humidity, A/C grills can form condensate. It is what happens when the cold air from the duct is mixing witht he warm air in the room. Sorta like a glass of ice water in a warm humid room.

I get this in some of our stores when the humidity is way up. Any other time they stay dry. Keeping doors and windows shut helps eliminate it, but when outside air mixes with the air inside you will get condensate. Really no way of correcting this problem unless you have a major air leak to the outside somewhere. Cutting down the airflow thru the vent may help. Try closing the diffuser about half if you can.

Duct tape where vent and ducts meet in area of water.

Do not think the pan should be dry, maybe draining somewhere else unless humidity is extremely low there.
