I have an older home with the ceramic soap dish on the tub wall. My son managed to break it off the wall. Anyway, it looks like it was held on with mortar before, how should I put it back on?

Thanks, Ken

Re: Ceramic soap dish fell off tub wall

I would get a tube of PL Premium construction adhesive. A bit of a waste cause you won't need all that much. Casa del Cheapo has it for $4.97 a tube.

Rim the back side, about a 1/4" from the edges, then run horizontal beads every 1/4" and smoosh it back in. I would try to level the mortor first, then clean any adhesive that squeezes out into the grout space. When it is dry, I would regrout around it. I think you can get small amounts of grout as well.

I would not caulk around the tile/soapdish perimeter. It would get ugly quick.

IF the wallboard or other surface behind it is still sound, clean it up (both the wall and the soapdish) and use some thinset mortar to put it back up, then re-grout around it to make it watertight.

Of course, I have the mortar and grout powder, so I can mix some up when I have to; hopefully you can get a small quantity if you need to.

Goop is excellent stuff, but for this application I'd consider it a temporary fix.

Just gluing it back up is only part of the problem. You also need to seal around it to make it watertight. Add in a factor of wanting it to match so it looks ok with the existing shower surround, and you will need to grout it. If you're going to that extent, you might as well do it right and use the thinset mortar. But really, this is not difficult (even I can do it:p)
