Certified GM Mechanic Advice Requested

I have a 2003 Chevy Z71 with 4.8 litre V8 with a manual shift tranfercase. Not sure what option package it has but it does not have onstar. It does have a drivers information area on the dash and factory security. My question may sound trivial but I'm curious is it means anything.

When i get out of the truck, lock it with the key fob and set the security only one of the horns sound. It use to sound both horns when setting the security. The truck has a dual tone horn and both horns sound when blown from the steering wheel.

I just recently had the Powertrain Control Module replaced (to the tune of I dont want to talk about how much the dealership charged me). I know there are other "Modules" in the truck and am wondering if only one horn sounding when setting security means anything significant.

Thanks for any and all replies.

Is there a chance.... that the body control module was made by another contract then the original or they changed the specs?

If your truck ONLY sounded one horn from the beginning you would have known.....

I can tell you when I worked at a chevy dealer the mechanics told the sales people NEVER push all the window switches at the same time to open windows or it could harm that module. It seemed to be a common failure.

I've no clue about the body control module, Bob. I'm assuming that its the original. I bought the truck at the end of '03 it only had 15k miles on it. Both horns use to sound. Now only one does.

this won't be much help but when the dealer replaced the module in my 'burban that displays miles, hours, mpg, etc....they used one from a fancier model and it didn't match up very well. they swapped it out for the correct one.

i'd call the dealer and make them earn what you just paid em.

My bad.... I was using the words I always use....

Body control module may be the same as the powertain module.... I just suspect a differant manufacturer...... could be the installation. Call the dealer and ask.

ehenry, I am no GM mechanic, but I have driven a 99 Century, 2000 2001 2003 2004 Impalas, and 99 Pontiac Montana Van, for a total of about 400,000 miles. And since all but 1 car was new when I got it, I have had to change those settings on every car.
Those settings can be changed in a couple of ways. On some it's done by doing all sorts of weird functions. Like depressing the gas pedal three times in 5 seconds with the key in the on position. Others are done on the radio. Do you know which way your are changed? If it's on the radio, it's very easy to do. And one of the options is a "Low Chirp" or "High Chirp" when you lock the vehicle with the keyfob.

Its possible that the new bcm has slightly different programing than the old one, i wouldn't worry about it. On a side note my dad 01 hd only chirps one.

abj87, it wasn't the BCM that was replaced it was the PCM. Not really worried about it but just wondering if it may mean something to a GM tech.

Didnt think about the panic button, Dolluper. I'll do that and see what happens.

All it means to me is that that one setting got "erased" or "reprogrammed" when the new component was installed. If it honks at all, the "alarm" system is still working.
