Would like to restore my faded swim platform this weekend and was wondering if the cetol is the way to go for a full season of protection.

I want to be 100% sure I don;t have to pull the boat mid way thru to redo it. Last year the teak oil products did nothing whatsoever and it just faded within a month.

Re: Cetol Marine Natural Teak still the best for durability?

The guys at our marina use cetol on their swimplatforms. In the hot FL sun and being used frequently, they hold up very good. One I know was done 3 years ago and still lookes good, but ready for another coat at this time.

I'm using Epifanes with UV protection. I don't think it is quite as good, but it is what I have leftover from another project. About once a year I lightly sand her down and apply another coat. Takes me a little over an hour.

Good Luck!

I used Cetol with the Gloss over the top on my Cruisers Inc. it's been a year and it looks really nice still. The only area that gets abused near the water is the aft steps, from the platform to the cockpit. These get walked on with shoes, sand etc and are also wet a lot. They also look good still.

If you apply the Cetol applications correctly then you should be fine..this year ..

No..its not the only product that you can use ..

Teak oil is for Peeps that Teak oil there wood on a weekly basis... if your not going to upkeep...then you need to seek something out like Cetol or Varnish..

For your Platform .. good luck .. get 6 coats up front and then do 2 coats a year...

Your Teak should look like a barn door after two years ... too bad ..

I am not understanding. Won;t the cetol prevent the platform from looking like a barn door? It looks like one now after oiling during the season, and not during storage........ its now grey and weathered.

What I am saying is that Sikkins will hide the natural Grain and depth of the wood in very little applications.

I mean..it looks OK..but not like high profile Brightwork that Varnishing does.

Sikkins has a Clear as well.

As I recall..you have to apply 2 coats of Base natural first..

I like the fact that you can apply coating after coating without prep from day one ( unless they changed it ) .. Very good workability and the coating is very effective .. but..affective as well.

Check out there products if thats the way you want to go :) .

3 coats of cetol natural teak.

I really did try hard to not "seal" the teak but last year the methods I used did not work for more than a week at best. The oil would just dry up, or within and hour of tubing, wash right off. This was my solution being right or wrong.

I just hope that with YEARLY maint coats, it lasts for as long as I own the boat 2-3 yrs.

Sikkins should give you want you want maintenance wise..

Like I said before..Sikkins is Very user friendly :) .. even the recoats are simple and easy to apply.

Much more then lets say Varnish ..

Its up to the end user of what he wants/needs though.

Your Sikkins job looks killer to me though. :)

I did spend most of satuarday sanding and using the teak cleaning 2 part process chemicals. I applied the cetol very late indoors. Made for one smelly house by the next moring.

Although a newbie at cetol, its all in prep. Just like body work.

I guess I have missed something in the past about teak oil and Sikkens. Can you clean your teak and apply oil to your teak and then apply the Sikkens? I thought it was one or the other, teak oil or Sikkens.

It is one or the other.. but he used a 2 part acid wash ( something like Snappy Teak Nu ) to Clean his teak prior to his Sikkins applications :) .

Yes, it was indeed snappy teak nu. Very effective, but just don;t use it all the time or you will wear away the teak little by little.

Yes..an acid wash like Snappy can destroy good teak pulp if not used correctly..
