hi to all

I was wondering if I can convert chain block to anchor windless and using car starter as electric motor.

Lets not stoping this post because the anchor windless cost around 1700 $ and chain block cost 150 $,

Re: chain block

A car starter is designed t operate for about 10 seconds at a time. Operating it for longer may cause it to overheat and fail. Also, a car starter is not designed to survive prolonged exposure to salt water.

Car starter motor will definitely burn up in a short time.

Re: chain block

thanks for your reply
the design of windless motor is the same as the car starter, the only thing is the power, and they used double power watt motor to be in safe side and seald it , and you can do the same
For example: if your load is 100 kg and its need 500w to pull it, they used 1000 w.
If I am wrong please give me link of windless motor
Thanks

Re: chain block

There is a reason why the anchor windlass is so much more money. If it were that easy, everyone would do it. Plus you will need to add the gear train to the starter motor. Then the starter motor will last about one trip out anyway. But it is your money to waste...

That was a cool set up that guy fabricated.... why wouldn't one start with a 12 volt winch motor with a large capacity spool ?

OR you can use fleabay.... I bought a used lewmar concept 0 for $175.... much 'gooder' than some soon to be rusted out chainfall and recycled starter.... try it if you want but there are better ways to get the skin off that cat.

Re: chain block

BTW... As a side note, I never had a windlass before... I LO LO LO LO LOOOOOOOOVE IT!.... If the economy forces me to downsize at some point I may have the only kayak around with a bow pulpit and a windlass..... I don't know how I ever lived without it... Now all I need is a self launching bow roller and 20' of stainless chain.

Re: chain block

Used a cordless drill to let our popup camper up/down when we had it. Then used it on the jack stands of fifth wheel camper. Amazing how much torque the 18V and 24V drills have.

Re: chain block

Ok in the start no one was agree, but now I can see lets of you like this
let's try with this

manual_4.gif

Chain block 75 $ with 2 tons or less can do more than good something like this, by the way you can find with AL case (light weight) . 2 ton chain blocks you can lift 300 Kg with your finger
By removing the hand wheel and change it with motor you can use coupling

thanks

Re: chain block

Seems like you have it all worked out, so why ask us? As TerryMSU stated, there's a reason windlasses are expensive. As was also stated, it's your money to waste. Let us know how it goes. Have fun!
