My little Merc calls for a Champion L77V. Couldn't find any, and local Merc dealer sold me NGK BUHW2 saying it was a good plug for this engine. Later, looking at a cross reference, I see the L77V actually cross references with the BUHW and the BUHW2 cross references with the Champion L78V. Both the BUHW2 and the L78V are a little hotter than the spec'd plug as I understand it.

Do you think the hotter plug will be a problem?

Is the Champion L77V an inherantly better plug for this engine than the "equivalent" NGK BUHW? (in other words are they really equivalent).

Thanks

Stay with NGK, float test the Champions. Surface gap plugs don't have a 'heat range'. The difference between BUHW and BUHW-2 is the gap. That engine should be using BUHW.

Chris............
