I was just listening to VP Chaney’s speech. Later, I will look for the text on the net and see how many times he used the word “U.N.” in that speech.

Chaney gets onto Kerry’s case, quoting a statement made by the Mass. Senator in an attempt to explain why he voted against the security appropriations bill last fall;

Quoting Kerry: “I actually voted for the bill, before I voted against it.”

People in the audience laughed.

Chaney raises his right hand and states, “It’s a true fact.”

Idiot! True fact? … What is a false fact?

I’m telling ya…there’s no difference in them come the first Tuesday in November.

Re: Chaney's Speech

If that little statement makes him an idiot you must have REAL contempt for most of the people here on iBoats. ;) I heard Chris Matthews from Hardball use "irregardless" a few times. Does that make him an idiot? I guess one time or another everybody makes a minor mistake, so I guess we are all idiots. Maybe you should run for President :D

If you can't spell the name of the Vice President of the United States. . .Richard Cheney. . .

does that make you an idiot?

Re: Chaney's Speech

I agree what was said was minor. It was the irony of it.

I imagine Kerry’s comment was out of context for its intent, otherwise Cheney could have simple said that Kerry voted against the bill. The choice to quote Kerry was probably to expose Kerry’s non-sense vernacular. Ironically, Cheney’s followed up with his own non-sense vernacular…and in that sense, also exposing himself as a hypocrite. Probably not a good idea to give a speech that criticizes your opponent then immediately follow up with a line that that exposes yourself as no better. :)

The “it’s a true fact” comment was not read from the speech…that’s the real dude! :)

Fwiw, if I had to choose between Bush and Cheney, I would take Cheney. If Quayle could ever keep his foot out of his mouth (doubtful), he could be a very serious contender on security issues.

JB - No. But I will take it up with my spell checker. How did it do with 'Quayle' ? :D

Do you think that there is anyone in Washington elected office that is more intellegent than ****?

A true fact. The definition of IS, IS?

“I actually voted for the bill, before I voted against it.”

This is a misrepresentation and or a rationalization. It is so rediculous that it can't even pass the laugh test.

A true fact is a misturned phrase.

This thread demonstrates a trend in America today. If don't like what a person has to say, you launch a personal attack.

Re: Chaney's Speech

Ok, you guys. Keep going…my spell checker is learning. :) … then I reload software and it all starts over, again.

Btw, Fox News is playing the Cheney piece as a sound bite, but cutting it before Cheney’s “misturned phase”. (I like that, Pointer…but I’m not sure about adding it to the spell checker. :) )

Here it is from Cheney’s Whitehouse web pages. There was no need to quote Kerry and if Cheney hadn’t he wouldn’t have "misturned." Note: the laughter was the same...Cheney "misturned" over it.

From http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/03/20040317-3.html

Senator Kerry has also had a few things to say about support for our troops now on the ground in Iraq. Among other criticisms, he has asserted that those troops are not receiving the materiel support they need. Just this morning, he again gave the example of body armor, which he said our administration failed to supply. May I remind the Senator that last November, at the President's request, Congress passed an $87 billion supplemental appropriation. This legislation was essential to our ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan - providing funding for body armor and other vital equipment; hazard pay; health benefits; ammunition; fuel, and spare parts for our military. The legislation passed overwhelmingly, with a vote in the Senate of 87 to 12. Senator Kerry voted no. I note that yesterday, attempting to clarify the matter, Senator Kerry said, quote, "I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it." (Laughter.) It's a true fact. (Laughter.)

A fact can be false. Facts can be proven to be true or false, an opinion can not.

Re: Chaney's Speech

Since we headed down this road:

Usage Note: Fact has a long history of usage in the sense “allegation of fact,” as in “This tract was distributed to thousands of American teachers, but the facts and the reasoning are wrong” (Albert Shanker). This practice has led to the introduction of the phrases true facts and real facts, as in The true facts of the case may never be known. These usages may occasion qualms among critics who insist that facts can only be true, but the usages are often useful for emphasis.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=fact

Don't agree, Kenneth B.

No such thing as false fact. False opinion, false belief, false statement, yes, but a fact is truth.

And to quote my favorite Philosophy Prof, "Truth is." :)

Come on JB, don't stop there. Heres a def from the link: 4. The assertion or statement of a thing done or existing; sometimes, even when false, improperly put, by a transfer of meaning, for the thing done, or supposed to be done; a thing supposed or asserted to be done; as, history abounds with false facts.
