I just bought a 1988 FourWinns 225 sundowner. It has been sitting for 18 months. Do I need to change the oil, clean carb or anything else before starting. I believe it has a OMC 305 engine. Any suggestions?

Re: Change Oil

You're thinking cap is in the right place Captain!
That's a capital YES for sure!

- Change the oil and filter.

Also, remove the large fuel filter and pour it into a clean can to see if there's any water content and see if it smells like shelac...

Give it a wiff!
If it stinks real bad you may have to drain your fuel tank or at least add a good octane booster and FILL UP the fuel tank.

If that's a carb motor change the small filter that is located at on the carb itself where the fuel line enters the bowl chamber.

Especially if you haven't heard it run yet..you may also want to pull the plugs - squirt some oil in the cylinders - disconnect the coil wire and spin the engine over a bit, then squirt more oil in the cylinders - spin it over again, install new plugs - then let her rip.

Hope this helps you out.

Re: Change Oil

It is very difficult to change the oil without warming it up.If the oil in there now is clean, which it is supposed to be changed before the boat was put away 18 mos ago, then run the motor first to warm up the oil.If it is not very clean, then try to get as much as you can out before running it.You probably wont be able to get it all out.Put some stabilizer in the fuel and put some fresh fuel in the tank.Change the large fuel filter cannister. To play it safe I would spray some fogging oil into the carb. and let it sit a day or two before cranking. You can also consider removing the plugs for the first crank. This will be much easier on the motor in case it was not fogged out properly or if there is too much fogging oil in the cylinders.Good luck!!! Re: Change Oil

Change the oil and filter (most will come out and if it is contaminated with water it will at least come out), the fuel filter, and add a shot of oil to the cyls., and change the plugs. I'd also change (if possiable) the fuel (shelf life on gas is only 3 months). Fuel stablizer is great for storage, however it contains no octane boosters or drying agents (alchocol) so you may want to add (at least) a drying agent if you can not change the fuel.
