I have a 1983 70 Hp Evinrude , Would it be possible to convert it over to a 1996 or new wiring harness ? Or would it be more troubles than it's worth ? Just asking ! The only reason behind this is so I could run newer controls, that's already on the boat . I know they make a wiring harness to convert a red plug system to a flat plug controls . Any thoughts , lets hear them .

John, The newer wiring harnesses are a three plug configuration. There is likely a conversion harness, likely one made by the manufacturer of the control. I was unable to find you a wiring diaghram to illustrate what I mean, but they are avail on the web, and likely on this site.

Yeah I have found a red plug adapter harness . On ebay , I just wonder if you had a newer motor that was bad and took all the electrical parts off and put them on your old motor would it work and would it be worth all the effort ?

It will not work without changes due to different locations of components and added functionality of certain components. Either you get the adapter harness, or you change contacts on the engine harness or you 'change' contact on the boat harness.
