Changed impeller, but no water...

Re: Changed impeller, but no water...

SO... I put the motor into a garbage can filled with water, and it works fine. At this point, I don't know whether to cry or rejoice... Days of headaches and frustration over a silly pair of water muffs that don't do anything for this type of motor. My previous boat had a 2006 40 HP 4 stroke and the muffs worked great. I didn't stop to think that they might not work for this engine...

Thanks everyone for your advice and help! Hopefully I didn't waste too much of you time with my questions. The good part about this whole process is that I have learned a whole lot about my outboard and how it works. (And I can take a lower unit off an outboard with my eyes closed :)

Just out of curiosity Jon.

How deep into the barrel did you have to put the lower unit? I fear that I might have to
Change the impeller on my 1994 120hp and I hope I don't have the same problems you had.

If I submersed just the lower unit (up to the cavitation plate) and start the motor. I get no water out the tell tale. If I put a set of those muffs on and force a bit of water into the pump. I get a slow stream of water coming out but it is not very steady flow. I'm hoping that if the motor is stationary the water level in the barrel has to be higher than the anodes above the cavitation plate.

The pump is above the cavitation plate so go at least 2 in above that preferably 4 in ..if you have any suspicions of your impeller get it out ....death by no water is no 1 chrysler killer ...

Thanks for that "Where the"fucawi.

I went out for a drive today and picked up a new impeller and gasket. I'm told that they are the correct parts for my motor. Impeller: 47-89984T 3 and Gasket 27-F694031.

I can't find any cross reference guides for the new parts. I think the original part number for the impeller is F694065. Does it sound like they gave me the correct parts.

I'm planning on installing it first thing in the morning and if all goes to plan, I want to take it out around lunchtime or in the afternoon. Now that my tilt and trim is working better than brand new. I think I'm ready to go.
