I have a 2000, 50 horsepower Mercury outboard that I've changed the impeller on. Now when I manually turn the prop, a clicking noise is present. How do I remove the noise and will it hurt the motor if I run it like this?

IF you turn the prop while it is in forward gear it should click. There should be no clicking in neutral and the prop should lock both ways in reverse.

If you have anything but what I have listed, you put the gearcase back on without aligning the shifter properly.

TMD

CHW, just did my 96 30hp, if it is the same you can adjust the shift rod without removing the gear case, sounds like you are in forward

Just as TMD said the prop shaft should rotate freely in both directions when you're in neutral.and when in reverse you should feel some resistance if you rotate the prop shaft either direction. If not remove the housing and try aligning the upper shiftshaft splines with the shiftshaft coupler splines.
