When you changed the brushes, did you clean the commutator (the round portion of the armature that the brushes ride on) real good? And be sure its not pitted or groved. We used to turn them with a lathe and then undercut them with a hacksaw blade. This was back in the 60s so it may not even be necessary anymore.

Before I changed the brushes the old ones at least turned the motor over a bit.
The starter doesn't do anything now except emitt a shorting out sound when I turn it over.
Brushes seem to be a no brainer. Is there a wrong way?
Doesn't seem to be.
At loss

Dirt or something on the armature could be shorting out the windings, or the positive brush might somehow have made contact with the housing. The positive battery lead might have made contact with the housing.

If it's the 2-brush motor, make sure soldered connection on the negative brush is not in contact with the motor housing.

It sounds very feasable that the positive is touching the housing.Do you think I fried anything?
Had a hell of a time getting them back in. What;s the trick
to those brushes.

Thanks much

doubt you damaged anything...no sensitive electronics in there...

couple pieces of wire or twist-ties, tie 'em into the holders, then slide the tie off after they're in place.

btw you can bench test it with a pair of jumper cables...just make sure to clamp it down to the bench.

Turns out I failed to replace the washer back on that separates the positive terminal from the housing.
All is good.

Thanks again
