I have a zieman boat trailer with surge brakes. The ball size is 1 7/8ths and I would like to know how to change the coupler to 2 5/16ths. Can I change just the coupler or do I need to change the Brake Actuator. Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: changing ball size

Zieman has a web site with a "Contact Us" link. I would start there.

Not knowing what type of coupler / actuator they use, most are integrated, and thus must be swapped out as a unit.

One thing I would be concerned about is the fact that ball size is related to trailer weight, and correspondingly, may be related to braking characteristics.

Good luck !

Why the change from 1 7/8th to 2 5/16ths? Going to that larger size will require a new coupler which will likely require changing out the actuator as well since most are a single assembly.

What is the problem you are trying to fix?

Re: changing ball size

what i am trying to do is make the hitch fit both boat and travel trailer to resolve the issue of having to change form one to the other as this is what i am doing now. i thought if it would be nice to have one ball for both if its not to complicated

Assuming you have a 2"x2" receiver hitch, instead of changing the trailer coupler why not just have 2 ball mounts with the appropriate size ball?
I keep 3 ball mounts around- 1 7/8", 2" and 2 5/16".

I agree with that one. it's a whole lot cheaper.

yessery arks thats what I have done for years and it IS cheeper then changing all the other stuff. mrdrake you might want to look at one of those hitches that have 3 different sizes on it so all you have to do is just turn it to what ever size you need at thet time.

Putting something bigger than a 2" on a boat trailer will make it harder to sell that trailer in the future. You can find fast change balls that go from 1 7/8 to 2 to 2 5/16 but the best ones only have a max capacity ok 10,000 lbs.

Re: changing ball size

adapt a hitch.... push out pin, lift ball, drop on other ball, push in pin.... takes 10 seconds
