Just looking for some advise on swapping lower end units. I have a 1968 650 merc outboard serial number 2353641 which ended up with a destroyed bottom end, which I would not like to discuss. I have found another 650 merc that is a 1970 serial number 2807208. I plan to swap bottom ends, i just want to make sure they will interchange, as i did some investigating and it seems on the 1968 there were 3 different versions, as 1 was short shaft, and 1 was long shaft, and another was slightly different. Both outboards look identical, and look like there will be no problem. The only problem i have is the broken one is 10 hours away at my cottage, so i kinda have to make sure everything is right, before i bring up the replacement to exchange. I have spent time looking up the serial numbers on these motors, but cannot seem to get the specs on them, only the year and minor other things. They are both 4 cylinders.

Thanx in advance

Any 4 cylinder unit with 2:3:1 gear ratio will work(650/800/80/850/85/75) as long as lenght is same ...

Thankyou very much for the reply. That is what I was hoping for , is there any way to know for sure by the serial numbers? Like would the serial number tell me if it is a long or short shaft?
