Changing color...

I'm wanting to change the color entirely from brown on tan to something else, right now i'm thinking yellow on white. I've already got the top and inside repaired and sanded with a few spots left to repair on the hull exterior. I'm confused as to the process, though, of what I should do next. I was hoping I could sand, seal, sand, base coat color X2, wet sand then clear gelcoat X3 with wet sanding between coats. This may be a delusion, but is this how you would do it? What else would I need to do? Would I need to totally remove the gelcoat that's already on there or can I just prep it then paint and gelcoat over the top of it? If I simply gelcoat the spots where I repaired the fiberglass then paint the entire thing, do I still need to clearcoat over it? I'll be glad to have this one finished so I can better understand the process. Oh, and what is fairing? I'm letting myself get very confused about something that's not all that complicated once I understand the fundamentals. Also, I was hoping to use awesome auto candy paints, is this also a delusion? I have all the equipment and have a nice downdraft booth rental. Please bear with me... my goal is to do this without frustrating everyone in my path along the way.

Re: Changing color...

Hello Dub and lets see if I can help..

I'm confused as to the process, though, of what I should do next. I was hoping I could sand, seal, sand, base coat color X2, wet sand then clear gelcoat X3 with wet sanding between coats. This may be a delusion, but is this how you would do it?

Yes and No..

You would prep your gel according to the MFG recommendation grit for primer ( normally 120ish ) .. then sand that to your MFG recommendation for your BCC.

Apply the Basecoat .. tack rag .. and then apply the 3-4 coats of clear on the same application stage.

No wet sanding is needed for the products that I used for BCC between the base and the clear.

After the clear is when you sand till 1500 and buff/glaze it.

What else would I need to do? Would I need to totally remove the gelcoat that's already on there or can I just prep it then paint and gelcoat over the top of it? If I simply gelcoat the spots where I repaired the fiberglass then paint the entire thing, do I still need to clearcoat over it?

No .. and then you lost me lol.

You do not remove the gel as stated above..you just sand/prep it. I dont know why you started mixing in the gelcoat after the paint ..

Spot prime your repairs first..then when your reps are finished the way you want it to look..then Prep and prime Everything.

Then you can prep and BCC.

Oh, and what is fairing?

Fairing is Sanding .. but we call it Fair because boats are not Flat. We can say 'sand flat' .. but you have all of your compound curves. Fairing is blending the curves to the Plane that is on the curve.

Its a generic term used in boat repair that means blend on end of the repair to the other without making a hump or a hole .. ( we are not sanding countertops ;) ) ..

YD.
