IF I was to change my 1978 85 HP Johnson to a newer OMC, Would I need to replace the controls< What year would I have to go into before having to do that?
Id like to for simplicity sake keep my controls intact.

Thanks,

A 78 would be using a Red Plug. as the connection between motor and controls. If the newer does not have the red plug then you will need new controls. I believe you will be able to use your existing cables. It's the wiring that will cause the issue.

I think they changed from the red plug to the modular plugs (new style) around 1996 or 97?

A control with the big red plug can be used on a motor with a big red plug.

They make a wiring harness adapter for what you want to do. See your BRP dealer.

The red plug system went up through 1995 model year. If you buy a 96/newer, you will need the adapter harness that boobie mentioned.
