I have a 1993 four winns 195 sundowner, it had a 305 omc and outdrive in it. I bought the boat with no engine, transom mount or out drive. I would like to know if I can replace it with a complete merc set up. This would be a 350 merc. My main question is about the transom cut out, and bolt holes. What needs to be done for this conversion. Boat is very clean and was bought very cheap so project is worth it. Thanks for any help

Re: changing from omc to merc

If the transom plate has been removed then...How does the transom wood look......... is it rotted or is the wood in good condition?

If its good than...im thinking you can fill the old cut-out with new wood and glass it inside and out. Then cut a new cut-out for the Merc set-up.

If is Rotted then its Transom replacement time.....Look in the resto. forum all kinds of info.

Welcome to iboats!

Doesn't SEI offer a conversion gimble or something?

He doesn't have anything to convert from. No transom shield, drive or anything.

To the OP, Yes, a Full Merc setup will work. Instruments should also work. The throttle control will be a hassle, get one for Merc cables.
Cutout in the transom is identical to Merc, even the height.

checkmate the transom is good no rot.
Don S. are the mounting holes the same or is it a different bolt pattern?
I know SEI makes a conversion bell housing to use with omc transom mount and merc out drive,
but I want to use all merc equipment.

That is part of the cutout, so yes they are the same.

Then it sound like I just need to find a merc set up, and get started. Thanks for the info
If anyone can think of anything else I need to know please let me know Thanks again.

Re: changing from omc to merc

Stick with the Mercs from 91 and newer (Alpha I Gen II drives) and be careful with 91 boats, they could have a 90 engine package and not be a Gen II. Very common.

If you do go earlier, stick with the 85 to 90 serial numbers, you start getting older and you run into the older shift interrupt switches that just don't exist any more. Could even be a problem for the 85 to 90 group now.

I was looking into those sei kits for mine. But when comparing the size of the cobra to the Gen2 there is quite a difference. My boat weighs 8k with a 350 omc. I'm questioning the gen2 durability compared to the cobra at this weight.
