I have a 1988 Mercruiser, Alpha 1 (With a 305)(5.0). Upon looking at changing the gear oil, i only seem to see a botton drain plug, and cannot seem to see a vent plug. I have had many outboards, but this is my 1st inboard. I wanna change the oil, but am i just not seeing the vent plug, or is there just not one there. Also i have always used the synthetic merc oil, and the guy that had this boat before me, use i think he said "red dot?" or something or other. Just wondering on which oil would be better.

Re: Changing Gear Oil

The Alpha I is not an outboard lower. It has an upper gear also. So the vent plug is in the upper about 2" down from the top, same side as the lower plug.

Re: Changing Gear Oil

so what you are saying is this is alot different then my old outboards, on them , i just took the vent plug out, then took bottom plug out, drained, pumped up from bottom till oil came out of vent plug, put plugs in and done.

This one is not done that way?

Of course it's different from an outboard, completely different.

ok so it appears that there are 2 reservoirs that are connected together.
So i have to drain from bottom, and then fill till oil comes out of vent. and done.

Ayuh,...

Remove Both plugs, Drain...
Refill from the bottom plug, til the oil runs out the top plug, reinstall the top plug,..
Then remove the filler,+ install the bottom plug....

Use a Quality Syn-oil,... Your drive takes just Over a Quart, so buy 2...
