Changing gear oil

Does anyone know if it is neccessary to pump the oil up for the bottom of the outdrive to refill the outdrive gear oil. Or can you just fill from top? It is an AQ125. Thanks.

All drives are filled from the bottom up. <br /><br />Primary reason is that SAE90 oil is thick, any air bubbles or trapped air will not surface quickly enough and you will get an overflow when there's plenty of air pockets. Ultimately, the air will be displaced during operation and you'll be running with very little oil - you know what this means. <br /><br />This question is always asked and is not the cost but the hassle and wait to get a pump. <br /><br />Take the trouble to get the pump.<br /><br />Good luck.

Btw an Aq125 does not take sae 90 it uses sae 30 motor oil.

Outboardguy,<br />You are correct, the Volvo outdrives use regular motor oil. Just pull the plug at the bottom to drain, then remove fill plug at the top(the big allen-head plug on the top of the outdrive) and refill until the dipstick shows full. DO NOT OVERFILL. Thanks guys, i am just going to have my marina do it before i drop it in the water. Where could i purchase one of these pumps though for down the road?

The pump for filling the gearcase can be bought at Wal mart or your local marine store.

Gentlemen!<br />I've been reading your posts. I have a 5.7 GXi VP w/DP's (2003). It appears that I will have to remove the props either to drain or refill, which then results in another chore in buying a torque wrench to put the props back on and purchase the special tool for the forward nut. Anybody have any experience doing this. It aapears the first nut is either 1 1/16 or 1 3/16 th. Plus while the props are off might as well lube the shaft. Sounds like an all day project.

I have a 4 cyl volvo engine with a Penta outdrive 1967. Do I change the lower unit oil the same? And I thought you had to use the outdrive oil?

I have a mercruiser Alpha one I/O. What kind of outdrive oil would be the most suitable for this? The model year is 1993 and does not have a reservoir in the engine compartment like the newer model has. Can I use SAE 30 oil for the outdrive? Any help is appreciated.

DBenja4148 the first nut is a size 1 1/16. I was at a propeller repair shop and they have a tool for removing the nut and retaining clip all in one. This tool was powder coated and looks very nice and usable. Did not ask for the cost.

Only Volvo Penta drives from the early Aq 100 to Aq 290 use 30 wt motor oil.After that such as dbenja4148's 2003 duoprop require a 75w90 Gl5 rated gear oil. <br />Beezee28 on a Mercruiser the recommended gear oil is Quicksilver High Performance gear lube.<br /><br />Dbenja, Volvo does sell a tool kit for removal of the duo props,I saw a customer with a set once and he said it cost around $65.You will also need a special adapter for the drain hole when you go to refill it

BeeZee28- your owner's manual should state type. If not used Merc Quicksilver High Performance synthetic gear lube- loooks/smells almost like 2cycle outboard oil. Not cheap, but compared to the OD you are protecting...
