I have a 1986 Evinrude 6 hp and want to change the gear lube. I have a kit that has a pump fot the oil, but no directions on how to do it. Can anybody give me clues or a link? Thanks.

Re: Changing gearcase lube

take out the screw on the bottom and the one on top ,both screws will look alike they will have heads for a large slotted screw driver, open the top first ,then put it back in a bit, next take the bottom one out and put you container under for the old oil,now take the top back out.reason for out and in with the top, sometimes the gearcase can build up pressure, and could shoot alot of oil out under pressure, putting it back prevents the oil chargeing out when you take the bottom out ,the top is a vent actually, now after its drained, pump the oil in the bottom hole until it flows out the top ,put top screw in then bottom.done

Make sure you replace the seals on the fill and drain plug screws. That is the most common point of lower unit leaks.
