The hunter green carpeting in boat is really starting to look bad and it is too dark. How much of a pain is glued in carpeting to change?

What's the big deal?

Just rip the old $hit out and glue in new.

I like the spray on glue(s) for carpet installation.

It can be a tough job if the carpet glue is still sticking. Removal of the old carpet will depend on your deck material. If you have a fiberglass deck, the easiest way is with a chemical remover to dissolve the glue (after taking out the carpet). A plywood deck (like mine) is easier 'cause the old glue can be scraped or belt sanded off.

Before installing my new carpet, I painted my deck with a 2 part epoxy and added some grit for traction. I had the new carpet bound around the perimeter and installed it with snaps. It's now easily removed for fishing (or parties :p ).

Sometimes carpet that is glued to plywood will pull pieces of the wood up with it. A good heat gun will help soften the glue and make it a bit easier to tear off and help avoid peeling of the plywood. A good wire wheel on a grinder is a good way to get rid of the old glue, belts on a sander become clogged very fast when cutting glue.

Re: Changing Glued in Carpeting

Txboatboy,
I just finished changing the carpet in my 16' fiberglass boat (Mirrocraft). The old carpet came out in one piece so I used it for a pattern to cut the new one. I got new carpet from West Marine, 20 oz weight 8' x 20'. Make sure you buy a piece of carpet thats at least 2 feet longer and 2 feet wider than you need. The toughest part of the job is taking out all the stuff that's in the way! (and then putting it all back in.) I used 2 types of glue, one was Synergetics 240 that came with the carpet and of course I ran out and needed more so I got 3 quarts of outdoor carpet glue made by Liquid Nails. (Seems to be tougher than the Synergetics.) It was a hard job but now it looks great and will last as long as I do!

Good Luck on your project!
olgeezer
