I am thinking about converting my ignition over to something different. Just thought i would ask the experts what would be the best ignition to convert to and what would be the end results of doing the conversion.

Thanks for the input.

Re: Changing Ignition

Is there a problem with your current setup that a proper tune up wouldn't cure? It would be a whole lot cheaper.

If you do need replacement - vote #2 for the TBIV.

Re: Changing Ignition

TB iv is an awesome ignition! find a used one and go for it if you need to change. the distributer wonn't be expensive (either v-6 4.3 or v-8 305 or 350 will work fine, just different cap for 4.3).

If you want a nice upgrade... I would probably buy a tb iv distributer and instead of the merc ignition module, a crane hi-6m cd ignition box can be had for about the same price as a tb iv ignition module. They trigger great of the merc distributer and are an easy install. Includes slectable advance curves, a rev limiter (that you set the rpms), and multiple spark discharge below 3000 rpms. they work well and are a reliable product that many have been using for years. and before anyone says crane is no more, s&s purchased crane and has the ignition systems as well as motorcycle valve train products back on the market already...

Re: Changing Ignition

Thanks for the replys guys, and there is nothing wrong with the ignition i have i was just wondering if by changing it over if i would really gain any performance from the engine. It runs really strong now and was just toying with the idea..

Re: Changing Ignition

hp gain, if any, will be low single digits. not enough to make a difference in a car, let alone a boat.

Re: Changing Ignition

the place where an aftermarket multiple discharge ignition makes a huge difference is running a long duration camshaft. it smoothes out idle a lot, makes starting easier and can dramatically improve throttle response at lower rpms...

The crane set up is nice because it includes both a number of advance curves and a rev limited that you can set.

not going to be worth any power on the top end - at all I don't think. the merc ignition is really a good set up and is more than adequate for all but the most extreme engine builds...

imho
