Do you know what year the engine is, some of those engines you had to remove the powerhead to release the shift linkage to replace the water pump.

Yes, a CD20 is a 1963. By the parts breakdown it looks like you have to pull the powerhead to remove the lower unit. The proof would be that there is not an ovel plate on the side of the exhaust housing to disconnect the shift linkage.

if it turns out to be one that requires the powerhead removal....there's a youtube video titled something like...removing the powerhead on 7.5 and 5.5 evinrude outboards...you might find that helpful

Not always the case Daviet. Some of the CDs for example have the shift rod connector, but you have to remove the gearcase screws, let it drop 1/2", to see it. They dont have the window. Just an FYI.

'63 5.5 hp you must remove the powerhead...no big deal. I just did mine a couple of weeks ago. You should replace the o-ring in the carbon seal as well as the cork gasket on top of the assembly while you're in there. Make sure the LU doesn't have any leaks...especially the shift seal or drive seal, or you'll be pulling the powerhead again.

Good luck,

Mas

Someone brought me a CD-25R tonight to change the impeller on. It has the shift rod connector between the gearcase and exhaust.

Anyways, I told him 20 bucks plus the cost of impeller and I would do it for him. Big mistake.

Started out, drive shaft is seized in powerhead, gearcase only dropped 1/8" or so, and to add insult to injury, the connector screw was also seized, and stripped. What a chore that was to get out with only minimal room to work. Have it hanging upside down right now in the basement trying to free the driveshaft. Have been working on it for a couple hours. Think I shoulda asked for more than 20 bucks, lol.

...or, you could have asked to keep you in supply of your favorite beverage until the job was completed!?

Good luck,

That is a model run, or mid year change. Used when ordering certain parts.
