I have a 77 ------- 9.8 Merc I just replaced impeller....I put the lower unit back on..and before I put the 2 nuts back on I check to see if
rev -N- forward... are where they are suppose to be, and low and behold they are not....I know that the shift lever has to be in the forward position....and (im not sure) does the lower unit have to be in forward also?...and if it does.... how do i know it is in forward?..I never changed anything since I took it apart(altho..one of my kids might ahve screwed with it)..anyways...can someone help me to get it in sync once again....

THX

take the l/u back off and with vice grips turn the shift rod (i think it is clockwise for forward) use a rag so you dont damage the teeth.

Re: Changing Impeller 9.8 Merc

You'll know the lower unit is in forward when you turn the driveshaft clockwise and the propeller turns clockwise (when looking from the rear). Also, the propeller will "ratchet" when spun clockwise in foward, and engage the driveshaft when spun counterclockwise. It will not make any noise when spun in neutral, and it will engage the driveshaft when spun either direction in reverse.
- Scott
