I have a 1974 50 hp evinrude I am selling and I want to change the impeller just to make sure a new owner doesn't have any trouble with it. I no longer have a manual for it and don't care to buy one as I am selling the motor and my boat has in I/O. It is a manual shift. How do I unhook the shift linkage to drop the lower unit on it? I've only replace impellers on electric shifts before.

You remove a screw (sometimes called a pin) from the shift lever which is located at the very bottom front of the crankcase. Remove the screw from the port side of engine-best to use a one quarter inch ratchet with a long extenson and a wobbly socket as the screw is rather difficult to see and get at.
