changing impeller

when i removed my water pump the impeller was in many pieces. i was told to make sure no chunks of rubber were in the system. can i flush it out with a garden hose.....if not how would i do this???<br />1976 johnson 85 horse by the way

Yes, you can try thye garden hose. Remove the thermostat, and flush from it to the pickup tube in the leg, both directions,and from the telltale to the tstat housing (and pray).

ok 2 things 1 i have no idea where the thermostat is and 2the two pipes that hook up to the water pump and go up to the engine look very beat up and dont even look like they were in their holes
