I am getting ready to swap outboard motors on my bass boat, & have never done this... I am going from a 2001 Mercury 250 pro XB to a 2008 Mercury 250 pro XS. Is there anything different that I going to need for a complete motor for motor swap? Also will the same prop work on the XS? I am running a 26 Tempest. And should I look at about the same performance? Thanks

Re: Changing outboards

Everything should swap except you may need to order a adapter harness as usually the 01 is a 8 pin connector and the 08 is a 14pin. Its part #84-896542T01.You will be happier with the XS as it better on fuel than the XB. If your keeping your oil tank make sure its flushed and you have DFI oil in it. Make sure you bleed & prime the oil pump and bleed air from oil system before use if your rigging it yourself.

Thanks Faztbullet! I knew about the adapter, but didn't exactly know the difference, as you explained it. Thanks for the part # too. I didn't know about the oil, I have always ran Mercury premium plus, I was thinking that would be ok. But I will flush and use DFI oil. I know my old motor called for 93 octane gas, but from what I read, the optimax is good with 87??? If so, I have 40 gallons of high test in the boat right now; is it ok to run that though it?

Re: Changing outboards

Alway use a DFI oil with a Opti. The 93 will be ok and I suggest a water seperating filter be installed if not already. Is the 08 new or used? If used you wont need to break it in ;)....

Re: Changing outboards

It is a new rebuilt motor that is supposed to have the computer reset to breakin period that he says is double oiling and about 500 rpm's less that WOT for 10 hours. And I assume that the computer will reset to normal after 10 hours. Where does the fuel/water separater mount? not sure if I have one or not.

Mounts in boat and has fuel lines running to and from it ,also has a screw on filter that looks like oil filter on truck.

Re: Changing outboards

Thanks for all your help Faztbullet ! I should be getting it in a couple of days.

I got the motor, and have put it on, but have not run it yet because they sent me the wrong plug...... They gave me a 10 prong to a 14, instead of an 8 to 14.

But anyway I have a question about the speedometer. It looks like the hose is running directly to a sensor at the plug on the motor, where mine was running directly to the speedometer. Does this mean my speedometer won't work? Will I have to get a new one, maybe an electric one? Or do I just need to bypass the switch?

Thanks
