Re: Changing the color of my boat...

When you say change the color... do you mean... in total or just the stripe? Your boat is now Gelcoat. To Re-Gelcoat it to another color is quite an involved process. To Paint over the existing gelcoat is, IMHO, a bit easier but still quite a bit of work to make it look good and last for a long period of time. Give us some more details as to exactly what you are wanting to accomplish. You'll have a LOT of advice, I'm sure, from all the guys here on the forum.

Re: Changing the color of my boat...

Thanks for your input, woodonglass... I'm wanting to change the color entirely from brown on tan to something else, right now i'm thinking yellow on white. I've already got the top and inside repaired and sanded with a few spots left to repair on the hull exterior. I'm confused as to the process, though, of what I should do next. I was hoping I could sand, seal, sand, base coat color X2, wet sand then clear gelcoat X3 with wet sanding between coats. This may be a delusion, but is this how you would do it? What else would I need to do? Would I need to totally remove the gelcoat that's already on there or can I just prep it then paint/gelcoat over the top of it? If I simply gelcoat the spots where I repaired the fiberglass then paint the entire thing, do I still need to clearcoat over it? I'll be glad to have this one finished so I can better understand the process. Oh, and what is fairing? I'm letting myself get very confused about something that's not all that complicated once I understand the fundamentals. Also, I was hoping to use awesome auto candy paints, is this also a delusion? I have all the equipment and have a nice downdraft booth rental. Please bear with me... my goal is to do this without frustrating everyone in my path along the way.
