When I change the oil pan, do I have to change the rear main seal gasket and the one that goes around the harmonic balancer? Or is that gasket all one piece? Also can I use an Auto oil pan gasket instead of the marine version?

Same with the oil pump, can I use an auto oil pump?

Re: Changing the Oil Pan 5.7 Mercruiser

What's the year of the engine? Do you have a Mercruiser serial number for it (would be on a black tag above the starter on the block).

Depending on the year, the rear main seal may be a 2 piece job ('85 and older) that you replace by removing the rear main bearing cap (pan needs to be off). An '86 and newer engine has a 1 piece rear main seal that can be replaced without removing the pan. The front crank seal can be replaced on all years with out removing the oil pan.

If you have the engine out of the boat, there's no reason not to replace these seals since you would have easy access to them, and they're dirt cheap.

Using an auto oil pan depends on what's installed on the engine now. If your oil pan has the dipstick tube as part of it, you are not going to find an automotive equivalent. If the stick is separate (goes into a boss on the block), you may be able to use an automotive pan as long as you get the right year pan. Engines up to 1980 had the dipstick on the right side of the engine (while facing the engine). Then after that, engines had the dipstick on the left side of the engine. In '86 they started using the 1 piece rear main seal which requires a different pan.

There's no such thing as a marine oil pump. A standard small block Chevy pump will work fine. Make sure you get a new pick-up tube for the pump, and it's not a bad idea to have it tack welded to the side of the pump body (after setting the pickup tube to the proper height in the pan) so it doesn't drop off from vibration.

The engine is an '89 5.7 I have seen the gaskets that are one piece or several pieces. I would rather not mess with any other seals than the oil pan gasket.

Chances are it's a 1 piece rear main seal, unless someone has installed an older engine in the past.
Your choice what seals you want to do, but frankly it would kinda suck if you got the engine installed back in the boat, and the rear main seal started leaking a couple months later. They're really not too hard to change out.

Ok cool, Can I get all the gaskets I need on Iboats? If so, could you tell me which ones you would replace? If they are very cheap I'll just do it while it's out. I'm restoring this boat and motor and I've replaced basically everything on the damn thing, so I might as well replace those as well.

Thank you so much for all your help!

Before you order any gaskets, you want to verify what you have first.
Look for the black Mercruiser tag on the side of the block right above the starter, it should have the serial number on that.

If you can't find a tag, the engine may have been a non-Mercruiser replacement. In that case, look for the casting number on the block behind the right cylinder head where the block meets the flywheel cover. You will probably see one casting number that says "5.7 LG". There should be numbers near that that can be decoded to identify the block (rough age, 1 piece or 2 rear MS).
