I have a 1987 6hp Mercury with a 3 blade factory
prop driving a 14' aluminum boat. Would changing the prop to a high speed prop make a noticable difference? If so what kind, how many baldes etc....

Thanks

Re: Changing the Prop?

Not sure what you mean by "high speed prop" - but how fast do you expect this boat to go on a 6HP?

Changing the prop will make some difference, but you need to post exactly what the prop is (size and pitch) and how many RPMs you're getting at WOT. Then the experts here can make some specific recommendations to you.

He's right, what do you expect out of a small motor. I have changed a 3-blade prop on a 35 hp merc. I replaced with a four blade comp prop purchased from bass pro shops. It made a difference coming out of the hole but not much in plane speed. Not knowing the pitch of your prop it is hard to say what it might do for you. I guess you sit on the rear of your boat to guide it, if that is the case you would have to balance your load to get the boat to plane out right to notice any speed difference. Good luck, but I would get a bigger motor. Tim
