What's so hard about it? Our mechanic said something about if you do it wrong you can bend the shift linkage and then you have serious problems. Sound familiar, or was he just justifying charging us 150 bucks to do it?

I see no risk for bending shift shaft when changing water pump or impeller either on the non thru hub version or the thru hub. As long as you go by the manual, and assemle one thing at a time.

It's not too tough a job, if you have the manual and some mechanical skills.

On the other hand, $150 isn't over the top for the job, if that's the total.

It all depends on how long it takes you, compared to how long it takes the mechanic at the shop. One thing I can guarantee: It will take you at least twice as long, maybe more, and you'll probably skin at least one knuckle.

Still, I do my own. Get the manual, though.

Yes, that was the grand total. We've done the water pump on our old trusty 70 OMC, and it wasn't that hard. We have the manual on it, my father and I read about it and he decided to let an expert do the job. 150 bucks later we are wondering if we could have done it ourselves.

If you did a 70, you can surely do the 28. I have both a 70 HP and a 28HP. The 28 is a breeze, as it's much lighter and easier to remove and line back up....Give it a try in a couple of years... :)

As CAT said, get the manual (the OEM one is best by far).
