This is what you need to know when removing the motor:

1.) Unplug motor. (think it's a blue and green wire?)
2.) Take out the two really long screws holding it in.
3.) Motor will now be sitting in the bilge. LOL

There really isn't much to it. No hydraulics involved. The motor itself is cheaper then a rebuild, so you'd be better to just get a new one.

I am guessing I must lower tilt all the way down before I remove motor correct?

the drive can be in any position when removing that motor. the motor actually is conected to the clutch pac which is that round thing on the left hand side of the drive, outside, at the bottom. I had to remove the boot and was able to remove the bolts by reaching thru the drive and transom, otherwise it is real hard to reach all the way back. since you have a 400 I am assuming you have a four cylinder, there might be more room to reach from the front, just be careful and don't loose or break the hammer coupling spring

nope it doesn't have to be. I removed mine when it was 1/2 way, I didn't have a choice it had been in that position for 7 years. and the power tilt was all sand and rusted metal in a pretty case. just make sure that the tilt clutch is nice and lubed as well when you replace the motor. Don't need to make it work any harder then it has to.
