I am getting into boating and really like the newer Chaparral Sunesta's (perferrably the 232). I was wondering what opinions everyone has about this...or the Chaparral line as far as quality and service ...or would you not even recommend these. Any and all replies will be greatly appreciated.<br /><br />Thanks,<br /> Dave

Re: Chaparral Sunesta 232

Siemers_d:<br />I have had several boats through the years, but I just bought a new Chaparral 220SSI a few months back. I did alot of research and comparison shopping (my first new boat)and only found a few boats that seem to be in the same ballpark with Chaparral. You may want to also look at Searay, Crownline, and if you have the $$$ Cobalt. The Chaparrall is a heavy boat but that suits me well when I use in the saltwater. I have taken a few beatings in this boat in angry water and it is solid.

Thanks for your reply Storm,<br /> I was also wondering about the motor. I have heard good things about the Merc. and the volvo. Which do you have or prefer ? Also would you recommend or even you yourself use a deckboat in the open water of just fresh? I would like to do both and I am looking towards the Sunesta 232.<br /><br />Thanks,<br /> dave

Re: Chaparral Sunesta 232

Chaparral makes a very nice deckboat. The 233 with full windshield is a newer design than the 232. That big windshield would help with the resale.<br /><br />If you want a dual prop, then the Volvo works a little better than Merc's Bravo III.<br /><br />Deckboats can be run in the ocean, with caution. Good idea to use the "buddy system" and go along with another boat, just in case.<br /><br />Here are some more threads that touch on Chaparral deckboats -<br />www.goboatingamerica.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001422.html<br /><br />www.trailerboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000623<br /><br />Kelly Cook

Siemers_d:<br />I have the Merc. Alpha I. I wanted the Merc. because there are more Merc. dealers in my area of the country. I have also heard that the Volvo Duo is better than the Bravo III. A buddy of mine has the Chap. 230SSI with the Volvo Duo and loves it. As far as the deckboat in saltwater, I liked the bowrider because I like the traditional look of the bowrider and because it has a deeper V and can handle big water better.

Hello,<br /> Thank you very much for your replies and the info. links. You guys have been very helpful. I don't plan on going out to the gulf stream, just huggin' the coast and lookin' for the perfect flounder spot...;o). I do like the looks, options and reliabilty reports that I have heard about Chaparral boats and both the volvo and merc motors. Siemers_d:<br /><br />Go to The Boat Rack's web site (I don't know the web address so you will have to do a google search under boat rack). They are a Chap. dealership on Lake Norman outside of Charlotte. They have some 2000 & 2001 deck boats in inventory. You may be able to work yourself a good deal.

Storm,<br /> Thanks for the info. It wasn't hard to find at all. I typed in boat rack and it was the first to come up on the list. Your right, they do have a good selection and i think it might be worth the drive when I buy.<br /><br />Thanks again,<br /> Dave

Re: Chaparral Sunesta 232

Below are a list of problems that have happened during our first 50 hours of boating last year with on brand new 2006 Chaparral 246 ssi. The first group happened during the first 20 hours.

Coming from a 2003 SeaRay 185 Bowrider this was a major upgrade on our family’s budget and but we felt that we were purchasing quality with this next boat and was my justification for the cost. I felt that someone or the whole team at the manufacture has let us down, bigtime!!

• Swim ladder at the bow came off the first time someone used it
• Swim platform arrived to the dealer damage and had to be wet sanded & buffed
• Snaps to secure carpeting came out of flooring, the screws were over tightened
• Chrome vents (engine compartment outside of boat) came unscrewed and fell out
• Key ignition cylinder on dash board had to be replaced, would stick when cranking(starting) engine
• Steering binding at the wheel by the tilt wheel adjustment, replacing steering box behind dashboard
• Gauge 4 in 1 with trim and other temperatures had to be replaced fogged
• Stereo had a constant buzzing at low volumes, amp had to replaced
• The screws in the wood trim on dash board were install incorrectly and were back out and set back in and now the wood trim around that area needs to be replaced
• Swim platform ladder in rear had to have bushing replaced broken
• Glovebox hinge broke
• Bumper for windshield in the center section that the glass rest on when open came off
• The seal along the windshield (center section that opens)come off
• The head liner in bathroom ceiling fell down (came unglued and separated)
• The passenger seat had to be replaced because it caused a rust mark on the flooring and carpet which I can not get out now
• The turn lock on center windshield spins freely and does not help secure windshield closed.
• Trim cover for screws in bathroom came off now left with bare screws showing
• The sink between the bowl and counter not sealed and water comes into compartment below
• Depth gauge gives misread on depth when under left turns and can not figure this one out????
• The canvas package: bow area the material around snaps is fraying and coming apart and on the cockpit cover has more fraying.
• The bimi top of the wake tower had a cover which said Chaparral on it the snaps on it are fraying apart
• Courtesy light on the flooring did not work first time used
• Seat cushion its support brace broke

The best part of the boat was something they did not build the powertrain , the Mercruiser 6.2 has been perfect, but the quality of the boat has been a disappointment. I guess my main concern is if this work ethic to quality for the trim items has carried over to the boat production in terms of its hull, I could be headed for trouble down the line?

The best part is that several calls and letters have been made and sent to Chaparral the their comment back and has been very standoffish if not even concerned ...they refuse to do anything in term off good will and consideration for all the problems ....I made a mistake in purchasing this boat and for $70k I would not do it over again!

That sounds very unusual for a Chaparral. Yours is the first I have seen with such a list of problems.

Your email isn't "moresummer@searay.com" is it?
