Hello, I have a 2021 Chaparral Surf 23 with a Volvo Penta 280hp forward drive. Towards the end of last year the depth finder started going on and off and at the same time I started getting the "CAN1" error when I started the boat. Since then the depth finder has completely gone out. That isn't really a problem, I don't need the depth finder, but the CAN 1 error has gotten to where it comes on continuously to the point that half the time I can't operate the screen to engage surf gates or make other adjustments, because the error has taken over the screen. Does anyone know how to get rid of the error? I've heard I can unplug the depth finder cable from the display and it will end the error. Is this correct? If so, where do I unplug it? Thanks for the help!!

Welcome
The CAN error can be any device on the CAN buss and any connector. Might just be a bad connector, one that has gotten wet (moisture) and corrosion has developed. Suggest start by disconnecting each connector and check, might use some contact cleaner

Yes, unplugging the depth sounder is a common fix for this exact CAN 1 error.

The connection is not at the display. You need to locate the black box for the sonar module. It is often installed under the dash or behind a side panel. Follow the cable from the depth transducer on the hull; it will lead you to this module. Simply unplug the main cable from that black box.

This should clear the CAN 1 error and restore full control to your screen.
