Characteristics of a spun prop hub?

Last Saturday afternoon while running home after loading up on the stripers, my new 2002 Merc. 150 suddenly increased about 200 rpm and dropped about 2 kts in speed without me touching the throttle or adjusting the trim. Then it did it again a few minutes later. I went from roughly 3400 and 26 kts to 3800 and 22 kts.

We were running directly into the wind and the wind speed may have increased slightly so I could understand the drop in speed but the increase in RPM? Also when we rounded a corner and got into protected water, the symptoms remained.

My first thought was that the prop hub was starting to slip but I was always under the impression that this is something that when it goes, it's gone..... It won't just slip a little bit. Does that make sense?

Didn't have time to run any tests on Sunday. I plan to pull off the prop nut and place a mark on both the inner and out hubs of the prop, run the boat pretty hard and then check to orientation of the marks to see if the hub has indeed moved. Just wanted to get everyones opinion first.

Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.

Brian

It doesn't sound like a spun hub to me.......but then I don't have an idea of what would cause those symptoms.
Backlash

Sounds like you may have picked up some trash on your skeg. A spun prop will drop you more than a couple mph'

Re: Characteristics of a spun prop hub?

Well, we had a spun hub sometime ago, and as far as I remember the increase of RPM was VERY HIGH AND NOISY.... I wasn't at the helm so I cant tell how much the rpm increase was, but I was near the stern and I recognized immediately that we had lost our prop hub because of the sudden and notorious rpm increase.

In your case I am also of the opinion that it doesnt sound as a spun hub. However, even when we have a new propeller, I recently marked the inner and outer rings, just to have a reference for my next inspection.
