Hi y'all, :)

Maybe I'm missing something, but when my battery went flat I took it out and charged it at home, then put it back in the boat.

It started beautifully :D , but when I put a Multimeter across the Battery terminals, it read just over 12 volts  ....therefore I assumed the charging circuit is bad.

When I chased the thick wires back from the battery all I found was the Negative (Black) went straight to the Powerhead case and ended and the Positive (Red) went to the Starter Solenoid then to the Powerhead case and ended.

Hmmm  , there are also smaller guage +ve and -ve wires coming from the battery terminals, but I can assume these are for the accessories.

So, is it normal for a Evinrude 115 fitted to a OMC Turbojet in a Fling "NOT" to have a charging circuit  ?

If I should have a Battery Charging Circuit, where should the components be  ?

If someone is keen enough I can take some pix of the powerhead and email them to you to try and sort things out for me :( .

Thanks in advance for your valuable assistance  .

Nigel

What year engine? Prior to the mid '80s, they (V4's) were know to blow the rectifier. It's only like 8 amp or so. It's a small black (usually) box sitting up near the flywheel. It will have 4 wires on it: 1 going to ground, 1 going to the starter solenoid, and 2 going under the flywheel to the stator. As mentioned already, get a manual.

Thanks for the replies....as for a manual, well I'm working in the Middle East and we don't have Evinrude dealers here that sell manuals. I'll get one next time I'm home in Australia. Thanks..The engine is a 1994

Hi Nigel...hope all is quiet where you are.

Did yer problem crop up all at once? If so, as has been posted, the rectifier/regulator most likely went south.

Just to add a little to Brian's post....Not sure which rectifier you have on the engine. One would set on the flat area just to the rear of the flywheel. Squarish box with several wires coming from it. The other would set on the starboard side of the block. It'll look like a small tin can setting on a triangular base with four wires coming from it....three yellow and one red.

The charging connections are at the starter solenoid as posted by Brian.

If you need a reprint of the original OEM service manual, which is the one I'd go with, chech the link below.

http://www.kencook.com/contactus/Contact.htm

Keep us posted...thanks.

Re: Charging circuit Evinrude 115

Hi,

Firstly Thanks for all your replies, they have been great.

OK, I went an removed the Powerhead cover and thought I found the "Blackbox" you were all talking about, sitting on top of the RHS Block (looking from the front of the carbies) so I removed 3 screws and flipped it on it's back....eeek, not just 4 wires, but loads of them...a quick trace and it looks like the blackbox is to do with the CD Ignition as there was wires going to each coil...but there was also wires disappearing under the flywheel.

OK, put that back before you break it.

Now is the Voltage regulator sort of semi covered by the flywheel and looks like a real hassle to remove?

If it is, then considering the "F" Factor, I might just leave the Volt. Reg. as it is and fit another battery and my Solar Charger.

Happy boating y'all,

Nige

Hi Nigel....what you found was the power pack. The rectifier sets on top of the block just up and to the right looking from the rear of the engine. It will be a little flatter and bolted to the top of the engine.

Keep us posted.
