I bought a 1987 ebbtide 180 riviera a couple weeks ago. It has the mercruiser 470 4 cylinder in it,the gentleman i bought it from took the stator out and put an alternator on this thing. It's not charging the battery, he put a 3 wire alternator on it and im wondering if he has it connected right? The alternator is brand new so i know it should be charging. Can anyone help me with details on the proper way this should be hooked up or could it be something else causing it not to charge? Thanks in advance guys as you have been very helpful in the past to me!!

if its a merc alternator then red pig tail is battery + (sense), black/purple pig tail is ignition+, b+ (bolt) is output may go to starter solinoid or battery and b- (screw or bolt) is ground (dc-)

I don't think this is a merc. alternator. it has the output bolt and 2 wires coming off the pigtail one is red and the other is white. Not even sure this thing is even a marine alternator either..........is it ok to run these engines with a non marine alternator on them or should i just change this thing?

with out looking at the model number i do not know how to tell the diffrence. the white is the ign +, red to battery + and bolt output to battery + or starter solinoid

No, it's NOT okay! Change it out if you can't verify it's a marine alternator.

If it's not a marine alternator you will most likely blow up your boat and yourself with it. Sparks from inside the alternator can easily ignite fuel vapors in the engine compartment.
