Charging Problem with 1974 115hp

I recently bought a deck boat with a 1974 Evinrude Starflite 115 hp outboard. I have two questions about the motor

1. The third time I used it, I got water in the gas (I could tell by draining the carbs). I subsequently fouled the plugs trying to start it. The following weekend, I installed new plugs but the motor had no spark. I messed with it for about 3 hours, and in a fit of despairation, I loosened and wiggled every wire connection, and wala, it now has spark. I took it out yesterday and ran 10 gallons of gas through it. It ran great, not even a hiccup. Does it seem possible that it just had a bad connection, or do you think something else is wrong.

2. The motor doesn't charge the battery. The battery voltage stays constant at about 12.7 volts (I charged the battery before I went out). The fellow near me who owns a marina says just to charge the battery every couple outings, but I'd rather have the motor charge the battery as designed. That way I could have lights, a fishfinder and a radio without worry. What usually fails to cause the charging system to die. My marina friend says the stator, but he was at a loss as to how to check it. I'd prefer not wasting money throwing parts at it without diagnosing the problem first.
Also, my marina friend says that this motor only uses the battery to start. He says it will run with no battery since it uses a magneto ignition system, that is seperate from the charging system. Is that true?

I didn't pay much for this boat, but its in good shape, and a blast to cruise around on. Its from Texas, and only saw fresh water. It wasn't used from 1989 through 2002, and in 2002 I have a receipt from a marina rebuilding the carbs and waterpump to "un-mothball" the engine.

Were these good engines? I've had so-so luck with OMC stuff in the past. Is there any special maintence this motor needs?

Thanks!
Aaron

Re: Charging Problem with 1974 115hp

I doubt it's a problem with the stator. I've never had a problem with the one on my '74 115 and we've had the motor since it was new.

Whenever my '74 115 has failed to charge the battery it's always been because the rectifier has failed and I've had a few of them go. Check all the connections having to do with the rectifier first and make sure they're all good and clean. Also check and make sure the rectifier leads that go to the pulse pack are going to the correct terminals. If you have a Clymer manual it will tell you how to test the rectifier with a multi-meter.

Does your boat have a tachometer ? If the rectifier goes then the tach usually won't work either.

My '74 has been an excellent engine. Once you get them set up right and working properly you hardly ever have problems with them so long as you keep up with the basic maintenance and winterize them properly every year.

If you're thinking you've got some flakey electricals somewhere I recommend you get a can of Caig De-Oxit contact cleaner deoxidizer (magic stuff) and go through the motor and clean up/de-ox every connection and ground you can get at. The De-oxit will preserve those connections and keep them from oxidizing again so if you ever start having problems again you can be pretty sure it's not arising from any of those connections and grounds being dirty so you can start troubleshooting other things first.

Another thing you can do is get some good 7mm spark plug wires and some new 90 degree boots and replace all the spark plug leads. They just unscrew out of the coils. Alternatively, you can just unscrew each of the spark plug leads from the coils, snip off the last 1/4" or so and screw the leads back into the coils. Hit the ends with a little De-oxit spray before screwing them into the coils then you'll know you have fresh clean connections at the coil ends. Do the same at the boot ends as well if you can afford cut a little off both ends of the spark plug wires. The stock wires aren't very long so that's why I suggest building your own set instead.

AaronG don't know anything about Caig De_Oxit but the Evinrude repair manual recommends using Isopropyl alchol to clean connections and contacts. The other stuff may be better, like I said don't know. I'm like Roj115 on the stator. I recommend a manual if you don't have one. Clymers is good but personally I like the Evinrude manual specific to my engine. Good Luck.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to look into getting that manual today. Any idea as to where to get the manual or rectifier? I treid looking it up on the iboats parts finder, but the engine is too old.

-Aaron

AaronG,
the de-oxit is great stuff,I used it for years in the electronics industry. This stuff has solved many erratic problems. They have a web site at Caig Labs.

I installed the rectifier over the weekend. That was the problem, it charges fine now. Thanks!
